Bergen op Zoom

Bergen op Zoom is a typical Brabant town. Narrow streets, old market squares and unusual monuments tell the story of a rich and eventful past. The monumental buildings in the centre form a unique backdrop for nice shops, cafes and buzzing restaurants. The rich past of Bergen op Zoom is also plain to see from the many beautifully restored buildings. The oldest monument in the Marquise town is the Lievevrouwenpoort, also called the Gevangenpoort. This building is part of the city walls and later served as a prison. The most eye-catching monument in the town is the Markiezenhof. The former palatial residence of the Gentlemen and Marquis of Bergen op Zoom is now a museum. Around the Grote Markt there are many more fine monuments to be seen: the Sint Gertrudiskerk, De Maagd theatre and the monumental town hall.

Total distance from Familyland is 10 km.

Antwerpen

Just like so many other big cities, Antwerp grew on the banks of an important river. This charming “City on the Schelde” is also the world centre for diamond processing as well as the home port of the painter Peter Paul Rubens.

When you travel by train to Antwerp, you’ll get an immediate impression of the most spectacular buildings of the city. The Central Station certainly earned the nickname ‘railway cathedral’. Of course you can also come to this city for a nice afternoon’s shopping. The streets behind the Central Station make up the diamond quarter. This part of the city is called “the Jerusalem of the North”. Antwerp is not just a city of monuments but also a city on the Schelde. A trip along the Schelde is highly recommended for admiring the skyline with its antique facades and towers.

The world famous Antwerp “Zoo” is right near the Central Station. The zoo stands out for its architecture and colourful animal pavilions.

Also well worth a visit is the Metropolis:
This mega-cinema has as many as 24 theatres and can be reached by taking the motorway in the direction of Antwerp. Take exit to Merksem and then exit Antwerpen Centrum. The films at the Metropolis show every day at 14.30, 17.00, 20.00 and 22.30. If you want to see a film on a Saturday, make sure you arrive in good time to avoid the huge queues.

Bird market:
The actual bird market for poultry, songbirds and rabbits, marmots and guinea pigs is just a small part of the whole market that takes place every Sunday. It attracts many thousands of visitors, especially day visitors from the Netherlands. The rest of the Sunday market is diverse. On and around the theatre square near the Antwerp Theatre you can count a good four hundred stalls of different plumage stretching for 3.5 kilometres. There are stalls selling textiles, flowers and plants, fruit and veg, tools, cheese, tights, sweets, etc. There are also stalls selling antiques, knick-knacks and other junk, ramshackle garden furniture, worn out clothing, defective standard lamps, glassware and too many other things to mention. Officially the market closes at one o’clock in the afternoon, but in the bars around the market they clearly think differently. There the post-market atmosphere lasts well into the afternoon...

Welcome to the Brabantse Wal

The Brabant Wal lies in West-Brabant, on the border with Zeeland and Flanders, in the districts of Woensdrecht, Bergen op Zoom and Steenbergen.
The Brabant Wal is a unique landscape in the Netherlands: a steep passage from the high sand grounds to the low-lying sea clay terrain.
The Woensdrecht district has the Brabant Wal to thank for its special location, a ridge of hills with an exceptional variety of plants, animals and culturally historical places of interest.

The steep ridge meanders from Ossendrecht via Hoogerheide, Woensdrecht and Bergen op Zoom to Halsteren and is about 23 kilometres long and maximum 22 metres high. It goes through the high and low parts of the landscape and offers beautiful views. Along the Brabant Wal six walking routes and four cycle routes are marked out. In a few special places, such as the lookout point in Fortuinstraat in Woensdrecht, you can get an idea of the landscape of the Brabant Wal as it was.
